Upslope is a new brewer here in Colorado and they are based in Boulder. They currently are canning four styles and the latest in the line-up is Craft Lager (4.8% ABV). On the can, the labels are “Bright – Fresh – Easy” and the ingredients description is “Made with snowmelt, Czech Saaz hops and lager yeast” and I made the assumption that this would be an American Lager with ties to a Bohemian Pilsener. The color is yellow gold with a nice head that quickly recedes. Craft Lager has a classic lager clean taste with note of bread, and a clean dry hop finish. This is a session beer that would be great to have after yard work or to take to a BBQ or a picnic. Nicely done and I think Upslope is a brewery to watch – they took a Gold Medal at the 2011 GABF for their Pumpkin Ale.
Covering various beers as they are tasted, home brewing, and beer-related items.

Great Divide - Hoss
Great Divide’s Hoss is a Rye Lager with and ABV of 6.2% and IBU of ??. Great Divide describes Hoss as “based on the Marzen lagers of Germany. Rich, layered malt notes, with hints of cherry and dark fruits, dominate, while the unique addition of rye imparts a slightly earthy, spicy character. Hoss finishes crisp and dry, and its brilliant red-orange color is a toast to the sunsets that make the perfect backdrop for this beer.” This is a very accurate description of this beer and at first I was taken back by the flavor, but it grew on me as I sampled the beer. I thought this would go great with a Rueben as I could pick up on the rye notes in the beer. Hoss has won a number of awards for Great Divide and this is a unique beer with the addition of the rye. I have not tasted anything like it.

Oskar Blues - Ten Fidy
Lori and I met Courtney at the Outback in Castle Rock last night for dinner. There were just under 10 taps with approximately 10 – 15 beers in bottles. My first selection was Sam Adam’s Winter Lager on tap at 5.6% ABV that is reddish brown. The website describes the beer as having cinnamon, ginger, with a hint of citrus (orange peel), but I did not pick it up. I was not real satisfied with this selection and was very happy to see Abita on tap. Could it be Turbo Dog? Yes, it was and I ordered one to go with my dinner of Sirloin Steak and baked potato. I had Turbo Dog the previous week at NoNo’s CafĂ© in a bottle, and I thought the beer tasted even better from the tap. Turbo Dog is a dark brown ale with 5.6% ABV and 28 IBU and went perfectly with my dinner. I will order Turbo Dog again, but I will not order Sam Adam’s Winter Lager.
